After a bronchitis scare last week, I am now WELL! Previously, I mentioned that I’m a dramatist/extremist . . . you can only imagine what I thought I might have contracted last week that would lead to not attending this trip & not graduating as planned in August. RELIEF ABOUNDS!

Tonight, our journey begins with the first of of three (3) prep classes prior to our departure . . . I am excited about meeting the other participants whose bios I’ve already had a chance to peruse. Looks like we have a diverse & interesting group.

I must confess that I’ve mentally red-lined/edited each bio . . . I have a horrible habit of doing so when reading anything! A bit of history on me – I was very fortunate, as a child, to have a father who made learning to read, write & speak PROPERLY – a lot of  FUN!  Instead of “normal” kid games, I played spelling, grammar, punctuation & verb conjugation games.  We had a blast & the time Daddy took affords me, to this day, an excellent foundation for communication.  (Don’t be offended; my brother’s a journalist for TIME Europe & I critique his writing, too!)

As I prepare for 05/09, I’ve already begun to miss my precious AJee; I’ll only have him for 20 to 30 years, not the lifespan of a human child, & our time together is very dear to me!  While I’ll  miss my feline & my human, I am all too certain AJee & his dad will enjoy their alone time together while I’m away.  After seeing his precious face, you must understand my endearment to this amazing creature!

For those of you concerned about swine flu and are curious if this may affect our trip: The GSU Study Abroad Office, your faculty an d RCB will take all necessary measures to keep our students healthy. The situation is being monitored daily through the CDC and the WHO as well as other reliable sources. At this point it is still too early to tell how this is going to develop and how it will affect any of the GSU Study Abroad programs.  Currently, all GSU programs are still scheduled to go. We have a professional team interested in making informed decisions.  If additional measures are needed, we will be in touch.  What is important is that you and your family know this is a top priority of the Study Abroad office right now, and we are monitoring the situation closely.

Naomi Leader, whom we PMBA students all know, love & appreciate could best answser this question on my behalf.  I can’t tell you how many times I contacted Naomi, to to verify answer to this question:  “Are you ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that this program will fulfill the requirements of my last two electives & I will be exonerated from taking these two courses?”  You guessed it; the answer was, ”YES!”

Initially, I had not intended to participate in a study abroad program, but the thought of covering two (2) courses through such a unique, cultural, guided learning experience was too great an opportunity to pass up.

Many of my cohort members not only participated in study abroad, but also took extra courses . . . while I’m generally an overachiever, I can only envy these folks for their zeal.

As we draw closer to our departure date, I am excited about the learning experience (and thankful for the time I saved last semester).  What I am most excited about is seeing BIG CATS – UP CLOSE & PERSONAL!

Wow – I can’t believe that we depart for South Africa in 13 days!   I’ve also been counting down the days until the last day of classes for my cohort – that’s down to 100!  And, in 107 days, we will each be awarded our PMBA certificates, with the knowledge that our diplomas are shortly forthcoming!  Lots of exciting events in the very near future!

I am now fairly certain that  I will embark upon this journey safe from malaria & typhoid, which is a good thing, as I tend to be somewhat of a hypochondriac (interchangeable with dramatist or extremist).

In Atlanta, we are finally experiencing Spring, after what was seemingly a prolonged Winter.  As Spring reaches Atlanta, I must begin packing for the cooler weather in S. Africa, which will be a blessing – given the amount of walking anticipated.

Since 2001, I’ve had the opportunity to travel the U.S. extensively.  In doing so, I’ve connected with many people & made lifelong friends.  I’m excited about meeting the other participants of this study abroad program & about the people I will encounter while abroad!

With the election just completed yesterday we will arrive in South Africa at an interesting time.  This may well be the big test if South Africa and continue on the path of a multi-party democracy or if the dominance of one party will in the end test the democratic ideals.  Result will become more complete this weekend. ..
